Good question.
Let me ask YOU a question.
If you stand behind a telescope to look at the stars and galaxies and planets, can you see your eye in it?
NO.
Because our eye is behind the telescope, it is not within the grasp of the telescope.
Similarly, we are living in this world using a telescope within us.
What is that telescope?
Our body, with its five senses, all centering into our mind ( which makes sense of what we saw or heard or touched or tasted, etc.) is our telescope.
So, MIND-BODY-SENSE ORGANS is our telescope.
And the consciousness ( the soul, the life force ) within us is located BEHIND our mind, and it is Godliness. ( There is no GOD, but there is GODLINESS everywhere, including within us ).
We think that we are conscious, we are alive, but when death happens, the body that we thought was alive does not move anymore – the life force, the soul, is gone.
Similarly, we utilize our minds to make grand plans in life, but when death happens, all the plans come to a dead halt – the life force, the soul is gone.
This shows that we have given too much importance to our body and our mind, never giving importance to the consciousness that is within us and the one that gives life to us and keeps us alive till the last breath of life.
This consciousness stays within us, but it does not come under the radar of our senses because it is a spirit, not a matter, so senses cannot sense it.
That is why Krishna says in Geeta –
नैनं छिन्दन्ति शस्त्राणि नैनं दहति पावक: |
न चैनं क्लेदयन्त्यापो न शोषयति मारुत: || 23||
nainaṁ chhindanti śhastrāṇi nainaṁ dahati pāvakaḥ
na chainaṁ kledayantyāpo na śhoṣhayati mārutaḥ
BG 2.23: Weapons cannot shred the soul, nor can fire burn it. Water cannot wet it, nor can the wind dry it.
( Coursey – Commentary by Swami Mukundananda )
The only way to “see” God is to develop Pragnyachakshu ( the eye of awareness ), go within, and experience Him, which can happen only via meditation.
He cannot be touched, smelled, or tasted but can only be experienced.
Your consciousness is available only to you and my consciousness to me.
That is the only path to reach God.
Running to the temples and churches, cramming up scripture after scripture, and chanting the name of God would not do it because all of them fall within the grasp of our senses.
And if God was within reach of our senses, we all could reach Him, but He is not.
So, the secret of reaching God is to be within and experience him, and you need to MEDITATE for that.
